Questions about tip creep

What counts as an unusual tip prompt? How do we handle sources? Here are the short answers, with links to the underlying reports.

What is tip creep?

Tip creep is the spread of tip prompts into more places, higher suggested percentages, and earlier moments in a checkout. Tip Creep Tracker documents the prompt that appeared, rather than guessing at a business’s intent.

Why are self-checkouts asking for tips?

Some self-service terminals include a tip screen even when the customer is doing the scanning, packing, or ordering. The archive keeps the location, date, suggested amounts, and source so readers can see exactly what was reported.

What is a very high tip option?

Tip Creep Tracker uses Very High Tip Option for a published report where at least one suggested percentage is 30% or higher. It is a browse label, not a credibility score.

What is the difference between a tip and a service charge?

A tip is usually a discretionary amount selected by the customer. A service charge is an added fee listed by the business. Some reports describe a tip prompt appearing alongside an existing service charge, which is why the exact receipt or screen matters.

What does tip on tax mean?

It describes a report where the suggested calculation appeared to use a total that included sales tax. We link to the source and keep the report wording specific instead of treating every checkout as identical.

Are the reports verified?

Reports carry source and evidence labels. A report may come from a firsthand account, a public post, an article, or a photo. Editor-verified means the underlying material was checked directly. One report does not prove a company-wide practice.

Can I submit a report without a photo?

Yes. A photo or video is helpful but optional. Include the place, date, tip choices, and a source link if you have one. You can submit without creating an account.

How can I correct a report?

Open the report and use the correction link, or email tipcreeptracker@gmail.com with the report link and the detail that needs fixing. Corrections are reviewed before changes are published.
